A starting point for discussion
The idea
Participants privately wrote a short paragraph about their opinion; they typically gave both their position and a reason. The AI helper generated candidate group statements for participants to rate and rank. After the top-ranked statement was critiqued, the AI generated revised candidates for another ranking. Participants compared the initial and revised winners and answered a brief survey about whether the process affected their views. They also rated their positions on the questions immediately before and after the full set of deliberation rounds.
Place in the reasoning
AI assessment · Connected to reasoning
This describes procedure and measurement, including participants’ awareness that an algorithm generated statements; it does not itself establish the procedure’s effects.
More similar views do not prove that a group has reached agreement
Procedure and view measures are context for interpreting reported agreement and change, not proof of consensus or causation.
Designing discussions where people can take part and be heard
The online rating, ranking, and critique process specifies participation arrangements without demonstrating broad inclusion.
What this means and why it matters
What this means
The process gathered private opinions, used participant rankings to select a group statement, and let participants critique and revise it. Participants also rated their positions before and after all deliberation rounds, in addition to answering a brief per-round survey about possible effects on their views.
Why it matters
These measures describe how the study tested a structured process for producing and revising group statements. The procedure alone does not show that participants’ views changed.

This describes the steps in each round and the separate before-and-after measure of participants’ positions across the full set of rounds.
